good morning, everyone. it is 6:00. let's get you out the door and we'll get a quick check of traffic and weather. elizabeth? >> all right, guys. we were just hearing about an accident northbound 101 on doyle drive right before you reach the golden gate bridge. and it's actual will you sounds like a minor accident right in the area where there was a water main break reported in the 5:00 hour so we are not sure if the two are related. northbound doyle drive at cemetery curve. southbound on golden gate bridge traffic light heading into san francisco. quick check of 880 through oakland. everything is fine past the coliseum. lawrence has the forecast. >> things changing since yesterday. we have some low clouds and fog sweeping onshore, elizabeth. and more of that to come as we look into the weekend. now, that fog mainly confined to the coastline and just inside the bay. but it's pretty thick especially at the beaches. be careful headed in this direction. dense fog along skyline boulevard. temperatures in the 50s. not seeing that marine

influence well inland so mid- 60s already in livermore. it will be hot in spots but you have to pick and choose. big changes over the weekend. that's coming up in a bit. thank yo. in a few hours investigators will be at an east bay dump site searching for a person missing in a murder spree. let's go to anne makovec in pittsburg with the latest. >> reporter: police could be spending hours today sifting through garbage here at the keller canyon landfill. this is the final piece of the murder mystery going on for days here a murder spree in the east bay. here's what led police here to the landfill in pittsburg. on tuesday, a cadillac escalade was found outside the entrance of the biorad corporation. that vehicle belonged to one of the murder victims, rita allen, and efren valdemoro the accused murderer was known to drive

that car. security cameras caught a car driving from the area near the cadillac toward the back of the building, that's where the dumpsters are kept. the camera range stopped before the dumpsters so no one knows what happened back there. here's a clue. employees reported a smell from the dumpsters soon after. now, at the same time, police were actively looking for this man frederick sales because his father was found dead. it is believed he was beaten to death by valdemoro. but by the time police heard about the suspicious vehicles and dumpster tips, the dumpsters were taken to the landfill. that's why police are searching here today. here's a background on the missing man's relationship with valdemoro, whom you see here looking quite beat up. sales and his father rented rooms from valdemoro's girlfriend and valdemoro reportedly accused one or both of them of interfering with that romantic relationship. valdemoro said the father and son then beat him up. he filed some police reports

but before police could act, the elder sales was found dead and his son frederick went missing. now, we are expecting police from agencies all over the area to arrive here at the landfill and begin searching at 9:00 a.m. we're told they have an area taped off where they are going to be focusing their search but they could be sifting through garbage for a good part of the day, john and sydnie. >> thank you very much, anne makovec in pittsburg. and anne mentioned those two women who are also what they think victims in this whole murder spree. we are learn abouting about a man who had been living with the two decomposing bodies they say are this woman. charles rittenhouse is a chemical engineer. rittenhouse is currently at the solano county jail facing explosives charges. police found him in his home tuesday where they also found the bodies of two women. one of the victims was his wife. police searched his backyard where they found barrels with mostly japanese writing on them. the only english word being,

"toxic." investigators confirmed they found a boat of depleted your --bottle of depleted your uranium. rittenhouse worked at goodrich in fairfield. the company does not use uranium. he will be arraigned today on charges positive sessing explosives. this morning, two bodies still in the small plane that crashed on the peninsula. that plane taking off from the san carlos airport about noon yesterday. a few minutes later, it crashed into a lagoon at redwood shores. some boaters in the area quickly got to the crash scene but couldn't rescue anyone from the plane. emergency personnel recovered a woman's body from the water, but two people still in the cockpit will not be removed until investigators check the wreckage. >> one of the bodies in the plane is believed to be that of the owner. he is 92-year-old robert borrmann, who owns a steel company in east palo alto.

the pilot was also killed. witnesses say he was a hero for steering the plane away from buildings near the crash site. the city of san carlos may soon have no police department. last night the city council voted to disband the department and contract services out to the san mateo county sheriff's department. the plan still needs approval from the county board of supervisors. most san carlos officers would become sheriff's deputies but some administrative jobs would be cut. the switch is expected to happen at the end of october. it's expected to save san carlos about $2 million a year. after three years of getting free gasoline, alameda's fire chief is now on paid administrative leave. that was chief david kapler. he safes the free gas was part of his pay agreement with the former city manager but no one at city hall has been able to find a record of that. kapler's base salary is nearly $200,000. hurricane earl is not a

direct hit on the east coast. earl was downgraded to a category 2 storm when its center passed east of the north carolina coast. maximum winds 105 miles an hour. but that storm still causing problems in north carolina and virginia with more to come. more will come farther north. no injuries have been reported. there is some flooding this morning on the resort islands of north carolina's outerbanks. thousands were told to leave and most did. >> it's at its worst point. we are not going to put any emergency worker in harm's way. >> we were going to ride it out in the pool and the hot tub out back. but when they make you leave, you know... >> business owners stayed to board up their buildings. now earl is headed north and people in new england getting ready for a wet labor day weekend. checking traffic and weather we are going to start with elizabeth for our friday commute. will people be taking this day

off as well as monday? >> absolutely. we are hoping for friday traffic conditions. friday extra light traffic conditions this morning. gridlock this afternoon as people head out of town for the long holiday weekend. slow towards the golden gate bridge. northbound 101 on doyle drive right there past cemetery curve, there was a solo spinout. chp on scene now. bridge crews are out there, as well. a minor delay according to ron with the kcbs phone force. we can definitely see slowing on the sensors. and there was a water main break in the southbound lanes in that same area at 4:30, 5:00 this morning. so a lot going on right there in that stretch of doyle drive. but it still looks good across the span of the golden gate bridge. so we'll continue to watch that. in the meantime nice look at the bay bridge toll plaza, nice and light here. hey, chopper 5 is with us now. live over san mateo, showing us conditions on 101 approaching 92. headlights moving southbound looks good in all lanes.

but the report released yesterday at a public utilities commission meeting blasts the utility for poor customer service. the report says pg&e treated people who complained as though they were wrong. not addressed in the report, whether there are any risks by electromagnetic and radiowaves from those meters. >> i believe it's incumbent upon you to discharge your duties under the public utilities code 451 to hold public hearings on the health effects of emfs and rfs. >> we don't pretend to be experts on rf. we pretend to rely on experts that are in the industry like dr. cleveland and others and we would make those available to our customers. >> the debate not over. a senator plans to call for legislative hearings on the smartmeter devices. vandals are marring a musical art project in san jose. ♪ [ music ]

good morning. of the here's a live look at chopper 5. first want to mention we are just getting words of a breaking situation in salinas. reports in an airplane down a small aircraft in lanes on southbound 101 approaching airport boulevard. our news crews are busy getting more information for you on that but we'll continue to follow that story. in the meantime chopper 5

closer to home. live look at 101 traffic in redwood city. this is close to the whipple exit. headlights northbound. looks good towards sfo if you have a flight to catch. southbound traffic fine into sunnyvale and the south bay. to the maps we have a situation going on, on doyle drive. sounds like according to chp northbound traffic is being temporarily held so they can clear an accident just past cemetery curve. so right now we are seeing a little bit of slowing there. we have a couple of calls from the members of the kcbs phone force telling us that traffic right now being held. southbound 101 looks okay coming off of the golden gate bridge. just some fog. at the bay bridge toll plaza still no sign of any metering lights, still looks good approaching the pay gates. fine all the way across the span. and 880 through oakland got an as game tonight. the as take on the l.a. angels at 7:05. delays later on tonight but

tonight taillights move towards high street very quiet towards downtown oakland and mass transit is a "spare the air" encouraged to use mass transit. everything is on time. remember our radio partners, kcbs 740-am and 106.9-fm. that's for the latest, greatest traffic information. that's your traffic. here's lawrence with the forecast. >> elizabeth, we have patchy fog moving onshore right now. how about chopper 5 up and about. you can see some patchy fog in the distance there. sun coming up, yesterday offshore wind blowing but now the wind is switching directions so you're seeing some of that patchy fog filter even inside the bay. still, we are working on some changes for the week and not too bad around the bay area at least for today as we'll see nice temperatures going to get hot in spots starting out fairly mild inland again. numbers up into the 60s there in many spots. partly cloudy inside the bay with some patchy fog. you have some dense fog out towards the coastline so if you are headed in that direction, be careful. numbers in that area, hot in spots. not the triple digits.

close. upper 90s in the warmest spots inland. 70s and 80s inside the bay. 60s and 70s patchy fog at the copes. more of that fog to come over the weekend. patchy fog at the coast. hot in the valley. 106 in fresno. high pressure weakening somewhat and that means temperatures start to drop off first at the coast then inside the bay. still hot at morgan hill at 92. 88 santa clara. 85 fremont. 48 in union city. east bay temperatures up well into the 90s inland. you get inside the bay and you will see a sea breeze kicking in keeping oakland in the 70s and lots of sunshine toward the afternoon. and the north bay temperatures in the 70s and 80s as you head well inland in the latter part of the day. 60s at the coast with a couple of patches of fog. the holiday weekend temperatures cooling down each day as we see a stronger onshore push meaning more low clouds and fog cooling you off through the next few then looks like towards the middle

of the next week temperatures headed well below average. some plays struggling to get into the 70s as we look toward the middle of next week. but labor day looking good should be mostly sunny and seasonal looks like patchy fog at the coast keeping you cool there. lots of sunshine temperatures in the 80s and 90s inland. that's a look at your weather. back up to you. >> thank you. let check today's top stories. a search this morning connected to a bay area killing spree that includes at least four murders. later this morning, homicide investigators will resume a search at a landfill in pittsburg. they are trying to find the body of frederick sales, missing since his father was found dead in their home in hercules. the son's body may have been placed in a dumpster near the home. the bodies of two of the victims in yesterday's small plane crash in redwood shores still in the submerged wreckage. they are being left there while the investigation into what caused the crash is conducted. that plane expected to be lifted out of the lagoon sometime today. parts of north carolina's

outerbanks are flooded and without power because of hurricane earl but no injuries have been reported. this is a category 2 storm now. it is traveling up the east coast. winds clocked at 105 miles an hour. it's 6:22. plans to build a new cell phone tower in los altos are moving forward. the santa clara county planning commission denied efforts to stop the tower from being built. the couple who owns the property wants to let verizon put up a 55-foot-tall cell phone tower. they already have three other towers on their land. neighbors say the property owners are violating zoning rules. the couple says they are within their rights and that verizon will disguise the new tower to look like a tree. neighbors plan to take their appeal now to the county "board of supes." when we come back, another check of weather and what you can expect for your labor day weekend. coming up, football under the lights for the first time. an east bay high school playing

breaking news in salinas where a licopter has crashed good morning. it's friday, september 3. >> and we have a developing story in salinas where a helicopter has crashed on 101. let's go to elizabeth with the details. elizabeth. >> yeah, it's right here, sids any. southbound 101 closed at airport boulevard. just happened a couple of minutes ago. it sounds like southbound traffic completely blocked. chp on scene. a helicopter crashed on the freeway at airport boulevard. we just got off the phone with chp. they tell us that one person was on board the helicopter. fortunately only minor injuries reported. and there are no reports of anyone on the ground any drivers on the freeway itself

being hurt. fuel is all over the road so southbound 101 traffic as i mentioned is closed between airport boulevard and gould road. northbound traffic we are told is getting by okay. but chopper 5 is heading to the scene so we are hoping to bring you some live pictures here coming up. again the location southbound 101 shut down at airport boulevard. helicopter down on the freeway. in the meantime we'll toss it back up to you guys upstairs. >> thank you. later on this morning, several investigators from across the bay area will be at an east bay dump. they are searching for the one person still missing in a murder spree in which four victims are known dead. anne makovec reports. >> reporter: good morning. police from all over the area will be gathering here. they could be sifting through garbage for hours looking for the body of a missing man from hercules. now, let's go back and tell you

what led police, the clues, why this ended up here this morning. on tuesday a cadillac was found outside the entrance of the biorad corporation, the vehicle belonging to one of the murder victims, rita allen. efren valdemoro was known to drive the car. the security camera caught a vehicle going towards the dumpsters like the cadillac. no one knows what happened back there at the dumpsters but biorad employees record an awful smell coming from the dump stores soon after. now, at the same time, police were actively looking for this man, frederick sales, because his father was found dead. it is believed he was beaten to death by valdemoro. but by the time police heard about the vehicles and dumpster tip, the dumpsters had been taken here to the landfill. that's why police are searching

here today. let's take a little about the motive. here's a little background on the missing man's relationship with valdemoro, whom you see here looking quite beat up. well, sales and his father rented rooms from valdemoro's girl friends and valdemoro apparently accused one or both of them of interfering that with relationship. valdemoro said the father and son, who is now missing, then beat him up. he filed police reports but before police could act, the elder sales was found dead and his son frederick went missing. so there was some hope that maybe frederick would be found alive at some point. if authorities find a body at the landfill today, that hope would be dashed. the mystery here would be closer to being solved though. >> anne, thank you very much. anne makovec in pittsburg. that suspect in this murder spry valdemoro also lived in a house where two women's decomposing bodies were found. another man who lived there was charles rittenhouse, a chemical

the helicopter is upside-down in the roadway so chp is diverting traffic onto airport boulevard. emergency vehicles have to access the area in the northbound lanes. so really expect delays in both directions. unfortunately, it's too foggy for chopper 5 to get out there, so chopper 5 a little closer to home. they are live in millbrae where we can take a quick live picture of 101 in this area. it actually looks okay in northbound and southbound 101 all along the peninsula. we'll have more. we are continuing to update that helicopter crash in salinas. a check of your forecast with lawrence. >> elizabeth, a lot of fog around the bay area. i don't know whether that had anything to do with the crash or not. we have dense fog at the coast. and that's going to be -- some of it will change the weather drastically over the next few days some of that sneaking inside the bay. at the coast today we are going to try to sneak in a couple of rays of sunshine but not a whole lot. that will keep numbers in the 60s for the most part there. you head inside the bay lots of 70s and 80s. still going to be hot in some of the valleys into the upper

southbound 101 at airport boulevard, a helicopter has crashed on to the freeway. and right now, all southbound lanes of 101 are completely shut down by the chp. the helicopter is upside-down in the roadway. chp is out there now diverting traffic off to airport boulevard. we just got off the phone with chp again minor injuries reported in this crash and no one on the ground was hurt. one person aboard the helicopter. this was an agriculture area so it may have been used for agricultural pushes in that area. chp out there now. the helicopter is reported to be leaking some kind of substance on the road. likely fuel. but that's why they have all southbound lanes completely shut down now at airport boulevard. northbound traffic we are told is getting by okay but that's how emergency vehicles have to access the area. so really drivers in the area should really expect delays

was yesterday. but going to get close as we head in toward the afternoon. if you are headed out the door this morning, patchy fog, some of that dense toward the coastline. be careful especially at the beaches. temperatures there into the 50s. a few patches sneaking inside the bay now and the inland valleys still staying clear. temperatures fairly mild. it's going to be hot inland. "spare the air" day. temperatures running in the 70s to mid-80s with sunshine inside the bay. out at the coast you will find a mix of sun and fog, cooler temperatures in the 60s and 70s. it's going to be hot in the central valley, though. 99 in sacramento. 106 in fresno. headed up into the high country? those temperatures moving well into the 80s and as high as 98 degrees in yosemite. but things are changing through the weekend as high pressure changes. that's going to allow for an onshore push. marine layer cooling off temperatures inside the bay somewhat. still 80s and a few 90s there. but as you head to the east bay, yeah, no marine influence for the most part. that means temperatures well into the 90s. but just inside the bay toward

oakland and berkeley a sea breeze will keep temperatures in the 70s. north bay mostly sunny, beaches patchy fog. next few days temperatures coming down. unofficial end of summer, cooling off, normal toward the latter part of the weekend. well below normal tuesday and wednesday next week with partly cloudy skies. labor day looking good though as we see mostly sunny seasonal temperatures, patchy fog at the coastline. 50s and 60s for highs. 80s still maybe some 90s interior valleys. that's a look at your weather. back up to you. >> thank you. it's 6:46. market reacting this morning to a new jobs report that was released a little bit ago. >> the unemployment rate is up slightly. let's go to jason brooks with kcbs and cbsmoneywatch.com with the latest on how the market is reacting. >> good morning. the market very happy with that report. even though the fact the unemployment rate went up to 9.6% in august, the economy

lost another 54,000 jobs, it was a lot better than expected. most of the job losses coming from temporary census workers. we knew those jobs would end. there were about 114,000 that did. private employers added 67,000 new jobs. that was better than expected. labor department also gave upward revision to the number of jobs added in june and july. the unemployment rate rose because a half million people resumed their search for work. they weren't counted the prior couple of months keeping the unemployment rate artificially low at 9.5%. also another good sign in that report, there were 17,000 new temporary jobs added after declines. employers start to add temporary workers to feel it out before adding permanent workers. it's nothing to shout about, but another report including the manufacturing report that we got earlier that shows we are still avoiding a double dip. the market right now up on that news. dow is up 117. nasdaq higher by 31.

s&p up by 13. still need a couple, three months to get a trend going before we get too happy. apple the iphone is no longer going to have an exclusive carrier in germany. that will be the last country in europe that has an exclusive carrier following france and england. also opening up to other carriers. two new carriers will sign on in germany according to the "wall street journal." but no word from apple as to when the at&t exclusive contract will end here in the united states. >> thank you, jason brooks with kcbs and cbsmoneywatch.com. bay area wineries turning to a higher power as the annual harvest begins. [ foreign language ] >> this was the annual blessing of the grapes in livermore valley. yesterday a rabbi and presbyterian minister blessed the first grapes that were plucked from the vine from the east bay wine region. nearly 50 wineries there will

but murders doubled, making oakland the 4th most dangerous city in america. jerry brown. he just can't deliver the results california needs now. bay dump site.. they're searching for the one person still missing in that . in a couple of hours investigators will be at an east bay dump site searching foye a missing man, in the east bay murder spree. anne makovec is at the site in pittsburg. anne. >> reporter: yes. there could be yet another victim in this murder spree. i'm at the keller canyon landfill here in pittsburg and that's where police are going to be searching today for the body of a missing man. here are some of the clues that led police to this site. a chain of events. first a vehicle that accused murderer efren valdemoro often drove was found abandoned in hercules. security cameras in the nearby building caught a car driving away towards the back of the building where the dumpsters are kept. then reports of an awful smell

coming from those dumpster. police are looking for frederick sales, because his father was found dead it is believed he was beaten to death by valdemoro. by the time the cops heard about the dumpster tips, the dumpsters were brought to the landfill. background on the missing man's relationship with valdemoro whom you see here looking very beat up. he said sales and his father did this to him in a fight over a girlfriend. he filed some police reports but soon after the elder sales was found dead, the younger one missing. so police are going to be here at 9:00 this morning to search for that body. thank you very much, anne makovec in pittsburg this morning. and we are continuing to follow this developing story in salinas of a helicopter that crashed on to the freeway southbound 101. we are constantly getting updates from chp and they have closed a longer stretch of southbound 101 now between airport boulevard and abbott street. that's more than a mile long stretch of the freeway. chp tells us the helicopter

pilot is alive. he was taken to the hospital with minor injuries. they also say the helicopter was carrying water, not pesticides. this is an agricultural area. we are not sure what it was used for. that's what chp is just telling us. this could cause big delays for people heading out of town for the labor day weekend. if you are heading to monterey, carmel, we are not sure when they are going to be able to open those southbound lanes. could likely be a while and again all traffic is being detoured right now off of the freeway off to airport boulevard. so we'll continue to watch that hopefully bring you some live pictures during the traffic cutins during the "cbs early show." quick check of other areas. in concord southbound 242 approaching grant street. we have an accident and traffic is jammed from highway 4. out to the bay bridge toll plaza, a bright spot where it looks great heading into san francisco and no metering lights. >> sunshine at the beaches but fog moved onshore. that's a cool looking shot. you can see the sunshine in the distance over the bay but the fog is creeping in at the
